GPR: Ground Penetrating Radar

GPR - Ground Penetrating RadarGPR (ground penetrating radar) is a revolutionary tool in the fields concrete inspection and repair, underground void detection, bridge inspection, geology and forensics. GPR units send radar waves into concrete or into the ground and reads the waves as they bounce back from underground objects, structures or voids. The units are portable and the resulting 3-D imagery is available in real-time.

GPR has a variety of applications including scanning for embedded objects in concrete prior to repair or modification like rebar, conduit, pvc pipes, tension cables and more. GPR detects cracks and deterioration in concrete walls, floors and ceilings. GPR is also used to locate underground voids caused by settling or washed out soils.

GPR is frequently used to detect underground storage tanks (USTs) and geological features like rock shelves prior to construction project excavations. GPR is an ideal method for bridge inspection detecting cracks and assessing the depth of deck pavement.

Advantages:
  • Accurate - High frequency antennas and computer based signal analysis insure an accurate location image in real time.
  • 3-D Images - Locate subsurface features and objects on x, y and z axis.
  • Fast - GPR units are very portable on site and provide instant location results.
  • Cost Reducing - a fraction of the cost of x-ray methods with considerably less time spent on site.
  • Safe - GPR uses a benign electromagnetic pulse (UHF/VHF frequencies). X-rays use a radiation source and require evacuation of the site and surrounding area.
  • GPR has many advantages over X-ray (read more here).

Capabilities:

  • Void Detection - Quickly detects and images subsurface voids so they can be filled preventing further damage to roads, highways, taxiways, concrete slabs and more.
  • Concrete Inspection - Accurately locates and images objects and structures embedded in concrete like rebar, tendons, conduit, tension cables, PVC and fiber optic cables.
  • Geological/Forensic Applications - Locates and images underground structures and geological features like USTs (underground storage tanks) unmarked grave sites, rock shelves and groundwater resources.
  • Bridge Inspection - Comprehensively inspects and assesses bridge decks for depth of cover to reinforcing steel and locations of any voids or cracks.
